The Mer Project - just a bunch of redshirts?

Recently, big news arrived: The MeeGo project . But let me start with some history. In May 2009 some key members of the Mer project met up for the first time ‘in real life’ at the Mozilla Maemo Danish Weekend .

Announcing MaePad for Maemo 5

Last Thursday, Claes Norin asked me if there’s going to be an app like Maemopad+ for Fremantle. “Neat idea”, I thought, and started hacking, overhauling the whole UI, refactoring some ugly parts of the code and making it generally shine and be usable as every day productivity companion on the N900. Claes was kind enough to provide me with valuable feedback and the necessary artwork

Marina Theme

Hello everyone. As I promissed, today I’d like to present you my first, and lets hope not last, theme for Fremantle and also the default theme for Mer called Marina. Dark, a bit glossy but calm blueish theme, packed with loopable wallpaper.

Running Mac OS X 10.3 on Nokia N900

Running the full version of Mac OS X 10.3 (powerpc) on the Nokia N900 smartphone! Correct me if I’m wrong, but this makes the Nokia N900 the first mobile phone EVER to run the full version of Mac OS X! I am using the pearpc emulator that I compiled for Maemo 5 in Scratchbox. As you can see, it is VERY slow - it took over 1,5 hours to reach the “About this mac” dialog screen. The video has been heavily clipped to remove the long periods of absolutely nothing seemingly happening - so keep your eye on the clock to keep your sense of time :) Come visit my blog at www.tuug.fi for more info about my emulation and N900 related hacks!

Porting Frogr 0.2 to Maemo 5

During the last days (well, actually during the last nights [*]), I’ve been spending some time in adapting frogr 0.2 to also compile and work on my brand new N900 (thanks Igalia!), and this is the humble result up to date: Perhaps you’re thinking why the hell I needed frogr to upload pictures when the N900 already comes with a nice and handy sharing application to upload pictures directly from the camera app or the image viewer, so here you have some use cases where I found the  sharing app not enough for my needs: To upload several pictures in a row to flickr, instead of having to do it one by one (tipical use case after taking several pictures that I’d like to share/backup in flickr). To set same name, description and/or tags to a bunch of pictures instead of doing it one by one (related to previous use case)

mNotes 2.0.0 Preview

While i’m still working on PyPackager, PyGTKEditor and others projects. I’m finishing an other one for first Fremantle release. mNotes is a Notes Application, specially designed for Maemo Devices

How to package a python lib for Maemo on your n900.

For this we will use the new pypackager 3.0. There isn’t currently no graphical interface (but the UI will be available in version 3.1). This new version of PyPackager is a merge between PyPackager and Py2deb.

Full Nokia N900 review now up on ZDNet

Readers here have been seeing my coverage of the Nokia N900 collected into my Definitive Nokia N900 Guide , but my readers over on ZDNet are a different base in most cases so I thought I needed to share my passion for the N900 over there. As a Christmas present to my ZDNet readers I just posted my full review of the N900 that includes six pages of text, over 70 photos and screenshots (including photos taken with the N900), and a video of some of my favorite aspects. I have now had the Nokia N900 for a couple of months so readers here may also find that review perspective helpful
