Propagating a novel  operating system (OS) can often be a frustrating chicken-vs-egg scenario, as many abandoned platforms and even current ones like Linux can demonstrate.  An OS won’t gain many converts without a reasonable stream of ready-made applications as well as the necessary ecosystem support ( especially device drivers ).  In open source contexts, this is compounded by Digital Rights Management (DRM) and similar sticky, usually legal, bogeys

MeeGo 1.1 For The N900 Is Here

The MeeGo 1.1 images for the N900 have just been released into the wild and are now available for download . But before you get too excited, do keep in mind that MeeGo 1.1 not ready to be used as a primetime OS on the N900 and that the images have been released following a release cycle, rather than waiting for everything to mature first.

MeeGo is the new mobile Linux platform developed by Nokia and Intel. As the community is forming up, we thought that it would be good to enable people to use their maemo.org identities also on the MeeGo web services (as well as on any other OpenID enabled website ).

Its Official: Nokia Is Dropping The Maemo 6 Brand

At the MeeGo announcement there wasn’t much clarity on whether Nokia was going to keep the ‘Maemo 6′ brand for now and then transition into MeeGo, but a simple post from Quim Gil , of Nokia’s Maemo Division requesting the renaming of the Maemo 6 / Harmattan sub forum at Maemo.org to MeeGo / Harmattan has brought much needed clarity to the picture. From Maemo to MeeGo, now where do WE go?

This morning’s stunning announcement that Nokia’s Linux-based Maemo mobile operating system would merge with Intel’s Moblin to form MeeGo was met with a wild variety of reactions , none of them meek. Natural fear and anxiety from many of those with longstanding and deep roots into Maemo were countered by fist-pumping exuberance from those new to the ecosystem and encouraged by what possibilities this merger might portend.
