Much has been written about the emerging Post-PC era, about the new possibilities it brings, and the limitations it imposes on developer creativity. For a while I’ve been planning to record my own experiences of the mobile revolution through the lense of the Maemo mobile Linux ecosystem

Just when you thought MeeGo was a closed chapter, comes news that ex-Nokians who worked on the N9 and the MeeGo community are coming together to ‘continue Nokia’s excellent work on #MeeGo based smartphones’. The new project is called ‘Jolla’, which apparently when translated from Finnish means a better rescue boat, an obvious yet cheeky reference to the infamous burning platform memo.

Front Page Nokia closes down more software development Meltemi, the not-so-secret, low-end, Linux-based, Qt-running platform for the “next billion” is just one of several casualties of Nokia's final confirmation of them as – more or less – a Microsoft OEM. Ars Technica's Ryan Paul wrote: “Embattled phone manufacturer Nokia has conducted another round of layoffs, reducing the company’s headcount by 10,000 employees. The company is tightening its focus and making deep cuts in areas that aren’t directly tied to its current Windows Phone strategy

The Linux Foundation sponsored me to travel to and attend the Tizen Conference 2012 in San Francisco and as part of this sponsorship, I’ll be blogging about the conference and my insights and thoughts of the talks and keynotes at it. While some parts may seem negative, please keep reading as I have a point with those parts that is illustrated later on. While some people might think that I see Mer as a competitor to Tizen, or think that I don’t like Tizen, in fact, I see the benefit of Tizen for the entire open source community that they’re pushing a proper, fast and working, standards compliant web runtime for Linux based devices

I seem to have not blogged about this, but Open Advice , our book on Free and Open Source Software: what we wish we had known when we started , was published last month. The book was edited by Lydia Pintscher and includes essays from 42 authors , many of whom you’ll recognize if you tend to go to FOSS conferences.

Tweet With not so strong aspect of gaming on the N900 , some gaming engines can be great, as they can provide us with tons of games to play. Well, there’s one engine ported to the N900 I’d love to tell you about: Ren’Py ! Ren’Py is a visual novel engine which allows you to create and/or play various visual novels.

Front Page A Technical Steering Group for Maemo 5 CSSU? RM Bauer , one of your Maemo Community Council repressentatives, is pitching a proposal to form a Technical Steering Group for the Freemantle Community SSU: “I propose a TSG (Technical Steering Group) for CSSU – 3 community members meritocratically selected from within the project who will oversee initial decision making over such things as project management, release dates, features, architecture and roadmap. To the extent it means anything, Council can delegate some of its authority so that the TSG can hopefully address related administrative tasks directly and more quickly without Council intervening on its behalf.” Discussion seems to have gone quiet, which is disappointing for something so important
