All quiet on the Tracker front

It has been a long time since we wrote propaganda about the Tracker project . That has a lot to do with both the holiday-season and the fact that we’re preparing for a stable release . This means that we are increasingly reluctant to new features.

Concepting a new IPC system

This is going to be a long post, and probably obscure for anyone not familiar with D-Bus . When I started thinking about this idea, I decided that I wouldn’t write about it until I had some code ready; but a recent thread in the D-Bus mailing list urged me to publish my ideas, in the hope that some people might be able to see through all this vapourware and possibly (but here maybe I’m hoping too much) encourage my employer to let me work on this as a R&D project. It’s about an IPC system with somehow similar functionality as D-Bus, but whose main describing features would be: low latency local only message data passing happens via shared memory simple lock-free match rules are tags lists peer-to-peer, with central server acting as a baby sitter :-) client API as compatible with libdbus as possible Well, if any of the point above captured your curiosity, read on! I hope it won’t be too disappointing at the end

Qt: users of qmake, rejoice!

Those of you who have used qmake to build projects for any length of time on Linux will have probably come across the PKGCONFIG feature by now. For those of you who haven’t, here’s a quick recap: CONFIG += link_pkgconfig # enable the PKGCONFIG feature PKGCONFIG += glib-2.0 # link against glib-2.0 While this looks simple, it has two small problems which aren’t all that fun. Firstly, it had what was really quite easily arguably a bug in that it didn’t halt the qmake process if a requested package didn’t exist

The Qt promise and what Maemo 5 needs

(tl;dr: Nokia should provide updated Qt packages as official SSU for Maemo 5. ) Before I start, here are some facts (correct me if I’m wrong): The N900 runs the Maemo 5 operating system Maemo 5 received some updates (the latest one being PR1.3 ) We don’t really expect PR1.4 to come out any time soon, if at all The MeeGo Handset images from meego.com are inferior to Maemo 5 and not a replacement (and never will be) The MeeGo operating system on the first Nokia MeeGo handset will have a proprietary UX and proprietary apps, and won’t be available for the N900 In summary, it means: We are stuck with Maemo 5 on the N900

Please test: MaePad 1.9, MaePadWeb 2.1, Trophae 6

Version 1.9 of MaePad is out, with a new translation into Catalan, updated Finnish (thanks to Marko Vertainen) and German translations, a “No items” indicator in empty checklists and full auto-rotation support ( detailed changelog ). The File Transfers application seemingly does some weird things to “Open file” dialogs in other apps (not only MaePad, but reportedly also Xournal), so MaePad now conflicts with it until the problem is fixed (this means you can’t have both “File Transfers” and “MaePad” installed at the same time). Test and vote for MaePad 1.9 in Extras-Testing ! Also new is MaePadWeb 2.1, which adds a missing dependency on python-simplejson .

KDE Mobile Sprint and MeeGo

Yep, I didn’t blog about MeeGo Conference yet. But come on, a lot happened during the last few days I barely had time to sleep really well (those that know me can tell histories about my sleep-walking and sleep-talking hehe). However, just to keep everybody updated before I do a full post or read an article on the dot here it is a simple video that means a lot! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKdLCGCTu8w Basically we put Plasma mobile to run on top of MeeGo and thanks to a lot of Marco’s work we already supported screen rotation! Besides the “fail” that drivers don’t properly report that the screen is being rotated on this device, pressing some keys we can make the view rotate and then comes the magic Of course we also put the Plasma netbook to run on the device but the mobile one was really nice to play with our hands Keep your eyes on the Planet as I think more people have news to share More about the sprint and the conference after the break 2010-11-21 17:09 UTC with score -5
